Ozempic is a brand name for the drug semaglutide, which is a medication primarily used to manage type diabetes and support weight management. It is administered weekly via injection and works by mimicking a natural hormone called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), which helps regulate blood sugar levels.

Understanding Ozempic

  1. Medication Class: GLP-1 receptor agonist

  2. Active Ingredient: Semaglutide

  3. Frequency: Once-weekly injection

  4. Benefits: Improved blood sugar control, reduced cardiovascular risks, and potential weight loss

Steps for injecting Ozempic

1. Wash Your Hands:

Begin by thoroughly washing your hands with soap and water to prevent infections. Dry them with a clean towel.

2. Prepare the Pen:

  • Inspect the Medication: Check that the medication in the pen is clear and colorless. Do not use the pen if you notice any particles or cloudiness; instead, contact your pharmacy.

  • Attach a New Needle: Before each injection, always attach a new needle to your Ozempic pen. Remove both the outer and inner needle caps.

3. Check the Flow:

If this is your first time using a new pen, it's important to check the flow.

Dial the dose selector to the flow check symbol. Hold the needle pointing up and press the dose button until a drop of medication appears at the needle tip. If no drop appears, repeat up to six more times. If still no drop, use a new pen or contact your provider.

4. Prepare Your Dose:

Dial the dose counter to select the correct dose as prescribed by your healthcare provider.

5. Choose the Injection Site:

The abdomen is a recommended site for Ozempic injections. Choose a spot at least two inches away from your navel to avoid injecting into muscle or too close to the belly button.

Rotate injection sites to prevent irritation. Alternate between different areas of the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Do not use the same spot every week.

6. Clean the Injection Site:

Use an alcohol swab to thoroughly clean the chosen injection site. Allow it to air dry completely before proceeding.

7. Inject the Medication:

  • Position the Pen: Hold the pen at a 90-degree angle to your skin.
  • Insert the Needle: Without pinching the skin, press the pen directly into the abdomen.
  • Deliver the Dose: Press and hold the dose button. Keep it pressed and count to six to ensure the full dose is administered.
  • Remove the Needle: Keeping the button pressed, remove the needle from your skin to ensure the complete dose is delivered.

8. Check for Bleeding:

There might be a small drop of blood at the injection site. Gently press the site with a cotton ball or gauze.

9. Dispose of the Needle:

Remove the needle from the pen and dispose of it in a sharp container.

10. Store the Pen:

Put the pen cap back on and store it at room temperature, away from direct light, until your next dose.

Additional Tips Injecting Ozempic in the Stomach

  1. Rotating Injection Sites: Rotate your injection sites to avoid skin problems like irritation or lipodystrophy (lumps under the skin).

  2. Timing: Inject Ozempic on the same day each week. Set reminders if necessary.

  3. Handling Side Effects: Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, especially when starting or increasing the dose. Contact your healthcare provider if these persist or if you experience severe side effects.

Remember Ozempic can also be injected into the thigh or upper arm. These alternative sites offer flexibility and can be rotated to prevent irritation and ensure proper medication absorption. However, it's essential to consult your healthcare provider to determine the best injection site for you and receive proper instructions on injection technique and rotation schedule.

Following these detailed steps will help ensure that your Ozempic injections are safe, effective, and as comfortable as possible.
