With all of the uncertainty and fear in the world right now, it is nice to have something to forward to that takes your mind off everything else. Celebrating Garden Week, which is the second week of April, can be the ticket to giving your mind a mental break while giving your body some physical activity. Though stay-at-home or shelter-in-place orders are in full effect around the country, you can still take part in garden activities and celebrations from your front yard or the living room couch.

Benefits of Gardening

Gardening isn’t just about brilliant blooms or edible foods. There are some amazing benefits to gardening, whether you are planting a raised vegetable bed or an indoor herb garden. Here are some things you can look forward too when you take up gardening.

1.     Gardening Glow. Spending time out in nature and working with your hands is an effective stress-reliever. In a period of time where tension and anxiety are on the rise, a chance to inhale fresh air and feel the warmth of the sun on your face can do wonders for your spirit and mental health. Built-up stress can wreak havoc with women's sexual health, and in addition to using a product like Scream Cream to get your pleasure and satisfaction back, you can try gardening to help soothe the restless spirit in you and present a chance to relax.

2.     Total Body Workout. Getting in your exercise at the gym is going to be difficult when stay-at-home orders are in place. It might even be rather boring and frustrating to try a living room workout when your kids are all underfoot. Getting out and tilling a garden, toting large bags of soil, or raking away dried brush are excellent and effective forms of exercise. Since you are engaging in goal-centered activity, it is easier to stay committed to the work until it is done. This often means you will work out or exercise longer than if you had been at a gym or in your bedroom.

3.     Weight Management. According to the research, those who take up gardening, on average, have a lower body mass index than those who are non-gardeners. The activity also lowers the odds of becoming obese or overweight. It is important for weight management goals, but it can also help with weight loss. On average, gardening as a hobby can help men lose up to 16 pounds and women up to 11 pounds during the planting and maintenance season.

4.     Dinner Improvement. Planting a vegetable garden has a key benefit of providing your dinner plate with healthy items. You can always go to the grocery store to buy your tomatoes, zucchini, or green beans, but there is nothing like growing your own and serving them to your family. If you have kids, having gardening as a hobby has been shown to encourage more vegetable eating throughout their developmental years. You are able to have healthy snacks, such as carrot sticks or snap peas, or delicious dinner sides with a vegetable garden that you have cultivated. This additional nutrition can have a positive impact on your total health.

Taking Part in Garden Week

Since Garden Week is right around the corner, you don’t have to wait long to start celebrating. You may need a few things in order to get started, especially if you don’t have any experience with gardening. You may have limited options with various stores being shut down, but there are still options for ordering things online or for pick-up at local stores. It is very easy to start with an indoor garden, whether you choose to grow small succulents or plant an herb garden for your window sill. You can spend some time decorating ceramic planters or pots, which can also be therapeutic and relaxing. If you are ready to take your gardening skills outdoors, you can start by preparing the plot of earth where you will be planting flowers, bushes, or vegetables. Working the earth is a vigorous activity, but it is a great way to get out in the sunshine. Depending on the soil you have, you may need to mix in some quality soil to boost the growth potential for your plants. If you are confident that your thumb is anything but green, there are air plants that you can grow. These little guys don’t need soil and require very little maintenance. This might be an option for you as you build your confidence.

While you are patiently (or impatiently) waiting for the time when you can get out and about, you can spend some time improving your health and beautifying your home and earth
