Few adults will admit their inner joy when Halloween rolls around, and with good reason. Although some probably enjoy the thought of being able to embrace their inner child and dress up as someone or something else for the day, more are probably enticed by the cookies and candies that are readily available all season long. If you are plagued by a sweet tooth, you don’t have to go too far before you find an orange-frosted pumpkin cookie or dish full of colorful candy corn. Everywhere you turn, retailers, friends, coworkers, and family are encouraging you to take a bite of their sugar snack. Not only is the food everywhere, but the stress of the upcoming holiday season can also drive you to stress eat your problems into oblivion. How is a health-conscious person to stay on track throughout the month of October? If you have trouble staying on track with your diet and weight loss plan, then consider these tips to help you.
1. Procrastinate Your Purchases
It could be tempting to run straight to the grocery store and stock up on your favorite flavor of snack-size M&Ms, or perhaps you are supposed to donate bags of candy to your child’s school class. Having candy laying around the house a few weeks before you need to hand it out is a recipe for disaster. Waiting until the last minute might leave you with fewer options, but it can save your weight on the scale.
2. Double Knot Your Bags
If you do have packaged candy sitting on the counter, double or triple knot the bag shut. The thought of having to work harder for a bite of candy or the sense of guilt that nags your mind as you try to undo the bag might be enough of a deterrent. If you are on a meal plan that reduces your consumption of sweets or you are on a protocol like the HCG diet, cheating just a little bit on your sugar restrictions can have serious side effects. Sugar has been found to be a highly addictive substance, and once your body has detoxed from its grip, just one taste can send you on a spiral to where you crave it.
3. Buy Boring Candy
You shouldn’t serve little trick-or-treaters your favorite candy, but you really shouldn’t be buying it for yourself either. If you buy candy that you don’t like, you probably won’t be in such a rush to eat it. Even once you open the bag and sit on the porch waiting for a cute little Batman to come along, a candy you don’t care for will be less of a temptation.
4. Splurge Elsewhere
Halloween isn’t all about candy and sweets, although it might feel like that when your doorbell won’t stop ringing. There are other festivities that you can enjoy that still celebrate the arrival of fall. Visiting a pumpkin patch or an apple orchard can get you out of the house and away from the urge to snack. It can also give you a chance to make some healthy snacks from pumpkin seeds or apple slices that you can munch on while you wait for the kids to come by on Halloween night. Carve a pumpkin or paint a fall picture is you need something to keep you busy.
5. Enjoy the Pumpkin
It’s a shame that most people leave the pumpkin flavors until fall, as they are delicious, healthy, and can be enjoyed in many ways. Pumpkin bread is a great tasting and healthy breakfast treat when made with whole grain flour, or you can indulge in some pumpkin waffles. You can use pumpkin puree to make a delicious soup, or you can add the flavor to smoothies or yogurt. Pumpkin seeds can add a crunchy and nutritional midday boost if your workload is zapping the energy from your life.
6. Walk Away
Probably the easiest tip to understand but the most difficult to follow is simply walking away from the candy dish or the tray of snacks. Studies have shown the when food is close by, people will eat it whether hungry or not. If you are at work, at your child’s school, the doctor’s office, or the bank, take notice of where the candy might be and avoid it. Place yourself where you can’t see it or smell it, and you won’t have such a battle within trying to avoid it.
