Your Guide to a Summer Celebration of the Blue Agave Plant

Your Guide to a Summer Celebration of the Blue Agave Plant

If the hot weather and the continued threat of COVID-19 have you cooped up for the summer, you may be in the mood for a diversion. With so many favorite summer sports and pastimes being put on the back burner to encourage continued social distancing, people in the house are going stir-crazy for a fun new way to pass the time. How about celebrating National Tequila Day?

Meet the Blue Agave Plant

Tequila is one of those liquids that can either tempt you into a night of lost inhibitions and wild salsa dancing, or it can be sipped on fashionably in a large salt-rimmed margarita glass. It comes from the fermented juice of the blue agave plant, and in order to be called tequila, it must be made in the state of Jalisco and a few neighboring states in Mexico. The deeply-rooted history is has in Tequila, Jalisco has given the town the honor of being declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006. In a slight nod to the power of female influence, tequila would probably not have the worldwide influence and appeal that it does today without the effort of the Tequilan women. It is through their cultivation and harvesting the tiny hijuelos plants are prepared for the distillery. The core, called the piña (the shape resembles a pineapple), is roasted in the distillery in order to release its juices. After this occurs, it is left to be fermented, distilled, and aged before being packaged in bottles. Tequila is a close comparison to mezcal, but the key difference is the use of the blue agave for tequila. Mezcal also has a slightly different flavor, usually considered a bit smokier in nature.

Indulge Guilt-Free

Now that you know what you are dealing with, you can prepare your own summer celebration of the potentially potent nectar. Unless you decide to go overboard with your tequila celebration and wake on the morning of the 25th with a hangover, tequila is one of the few liquors that you can enjoy with very little guilt. It is low in sugar and has no carbohydrates. This is a win-win for anyone that has been trying to work on their swimsuit figure. You run into a few dietary snags when you start adding in all the sugary mixers, but there are always healthy alternatives if you would rather avoid doing shots. There are some claims that tequila can also give you a few health benefits, but research hasn’t really been able to support those claims. If you need an excuse to indulge, then consider the benefits it has on your mental and emotional health.

Tend to Your Well-Being

In light of how the pandemic has brought isolation, financial stresses, and deep concerns over the economy,  it may be high time for you to take a night off. While you should always drink responsibly and within established legal parameters, getting one or two of your friends to come over or having a spicy night in with your partner or spouse can be a great way to take your mind off of what is happening outside your home. There are a few indications that drinking alcohol can help you relieve stress, but this is generally a short-term result. Alcohol, including tequila, acts as a depressant. It can alter mood and behaviors since it works on the central nervous system. For the mind that is racing and unable to get a moment’s peace, tequila is way to slow down the brain’s functioning and neural activities. However, moderation is the most important thing you can remember with alcohol consumption. Since it acts as a depressant, tequila could ruin your chances of capping off the night’s celebration with a tango in bed. In addition to slowing down your mind’s responses, it can also inhibit arousal and the ability to maintain a hard enough erection for sex. Men who feel that their party spirit will interfere with their late-night plans can use Mt. Everest to help increase libido and the firmness of their erection. It can take your celebration to the next level in as little as five minutes, so you aren’t hanging around in vain waiting for the after-party.

Find Perfect Pairings

As you plan to celebrate National Tequila Day, there are few things you shouldn’t leave out. First all, drink plenty of water throughout the day. This can help prevent a hangover, but also keep you from overindulging. Make sure you are eating more than just junk food, or else you will get off track from any diet plan you may be following. Tacos, seafood, veggies, or grilled leans meats with spicy seasonings are excellent pairings. If you are headed out to find the best margarita in town, plan on using Uber or Lyft or bring along a designated driver. The day is only worth celebrating if you can do so in a way that is safe and healthy.
