Low calorie diets can reverse symptoms of many chronic illnesses such as diabetes and others, and they are a great solution for health improvement for obese patients, but even for people with a smaller amount of weight to lose. Low calorie diets and very low calorie diets like the HCG diet should always be medically supervised, but they are commonly prescribed by medical doctors for patients that are obese. The HCG diet has many advantages over other very low calorie diets; in particular there is no other very low calorie diet that can specifically target abnormal fat while maintaining muscle mass. Maintaining muscle is very important for any diet, as losing muscle mass in order to lose weight is far from ideal.
Typically, very low calorie diets are in the range of 500-800 calories per day, although the HCG diet is at the 500 calorie per day range. They provide patients with very fast weight loss; over a period of just weeks patients can lose several pounds. However, the HCG diet is more effective because the hormone helps metabolize abnormal fat. On other very low calorie diets, the body goes into "starvation mode" where muscle is metabolized in a process called gluconeogenesis, as glucose is synthesized from protein in the body, and most of the mass of muscles is protein. This occurs after glycogen reserves are exhausted, and there is usually enough glycogen reserves available for 24 hours. Afterward either protein or fatty acids from reserve and abnormal fat are broken down for energy.
A main reason why low calorie diets can be effective at helping you lose weight and restore your health is because they give your body a break from the constant flow of chemicals and industrial ingredients that are included in many processed foods. In particular the HCG diet only allows natural ingredients and dieters benefit from the detoxifying effect that occurs, as well as the reduced inflammation levels. Processed foods can create a wide range of inflammation problems that lead to symptoms such as depression, low energy levels, fatigue, gut inflammation, and whole body inflammation. The HCG diet allows your body to heal from the negative effects of processed foods.
Your body rebounds quickly once you give it some time, and the HCG diet gives your body three to six weeks of a break from processed foods while maintaining a sufficient minimum level of calories. In various clinical studies, very low calorie diets have been shown to effective at reversing the symptoms of type 2 diabetes. People with type 2 diabetes produce insulin, however their bodies have become resistant to insulin over time. However, studies on very low calorie diets have found that they are highly effective at not only reversing the symptoms of diabetes, but in some cases reversing the disease entirely. No very low calorie diet should ever be performed without medical supervision, but VLCDs with calorie restriction close to the HCG diet (500-600 calories) are regularly used by medical doctors as a way to treat and reverse type 2 diabetes.
Research is currently being performed to find out exactly how this effect occurs. It is thought that a very low calorie diet can cause the body to burn some of the fat in the pancreas that is affecting its normal insulin response. Very low calorie diets improve the body's responsiveness to insulin, and they may activate the body's insulin producing cells. Many VLCDs follow a similar dietary protocol as the HCG diet, however the HCG diet has a carefully selected group of foods to ensure that dieters are getting the basal level of vitamins and minerals that they need throughout the diet. Most importantly, the HCG hormone gives dieters the extra energy that they need and it improves the efficiency of the breakdown of fat in order to provide the body with the calories that it needs during the period of calorie restriction.
There are several different markers of health that are used to determine a person's overall health levels such as levels of abdominal fat, LDL and HDL cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels, blood sugar levels, and more. All of these health markers can be dramatically improved with a very low calorie diet or a low carb diet.
