Why do we get Spider veins/varicose veins?

Spider veins are a result of venous insufficiency.  Although obesity can lead to to varicose veins, and the hcg diet is one of the most effective solutions available for rapid weight loss.  Spider veins are tiny capillaries in our skin that because of the reflux of blood from larger, deeper veins become dilated and can be seen on the surface of our skin. They are generally red, blue or purple and are clearly visible.  The Veins of our lower extremities have valves to ensure that the blood only goes in one direction, towards the heart.  With age, heredity, pregnancy, hormonal changes, obesity and extended periods of standing, these valves lose their ability to prevent reflux.  The increased back pressure then leads to dilation of the superficial veins.  The mechanism is the same for the larger, Varicose, veins.

The smaller variants of venous disease can be treated with minimally invasive treatments.  These include sclerotherapy or laser treatments.  Sclerotherapy involves using a nearly painless needle to inject a sclerosing agent into the vein.  This combined with compression cause obliteration of the vein through fibrosis.  A typical treatment lasts about 30 minutes and you are walking out of the office.  Some may take longer depending on severity of disease.  You should see the veins disappear over the next few weeks.  Depending on the severity of your disease, you may require multiple sessions to get the desired effect.  This obliteration is permanent.  However, since there are still faulty valves in other veins you may get new spider veins over time. 

In order to provide a permanent fix you need to obliterate the saphenous vein system. This is a more extensive procedure, but can still be done in on office setting.  This is called endovenous radio frequency ablation.  You are in and out of the office the same day and generally can resume normal activities the next day.
